Mature root in monocots: Lily

A transverse section of lily (Lilium sp.) root made above the zone of root hairs. The rhizodermis is sloughed off and has been replaced by exodermis. The central cortical cells are breaking down.

The endodermis stands out as a prominent ring of thick-walled cells. Inside the endodermis is a pericycle, a layer of thin-walled cells. Seven groups of primary phloem cells are evident.

Note that there is no secondary growth in spite of an advanced stage of root development.
